The People's Revolution

awards, the revolution

We were delighted and honoured to be chosen by the community at the Victorian Premier's Sustainability Awards last week. What an honour to know that the people have spoken and they chose the Compost Revolution!

From our humble beginnings as a pilot in the eastern suburbs of Sydney to nearly 40,000 participating households, we've come a long way – and diverted a lot of waste (over 8,300 tonnes or almost 70,000 wheelie bins!). Together we're diverting around 50 tonnes a week across Australia while making our communities more resilient and healthier in the process.

The awards were presented by Sustainability Victoria for the Victorian Government and recognise and reward Victorians who are leading the way in sustainable innovation and practices across all sectors within Victoria.

As a Victorian myself, now living in NSW, it was particularly rewarding to receive an award from my home state. And while Revolution Apps (the social venture behind the Compost Revolution) is not strictly a Victorian entity, we have had such amazing uptake across the state (12,000 households and counting!).

Winning the People's Choice award means so much to us because we really are a people-powered revolution, diverting waste together with every person in every household who chooses to support the program.

We are also only the sum of our innovative and forward-thinking council partners across the country, including our Victorian councils, which currently include:

Boroondara City Council
City of Greater Bendigo
City of Melbourne
Hobsons Bay City Council
Hume City Council
Knox City Council
Manningham Council
Maroondah City Council
Nillumbik Shire Council
Stonnington City Council

A huge thank you to all our council partners – past and present – and every household who has joined and begun their personal waste journey with us. This award goes to you!

Vive la révolution!
